Barranco

Referred to as the bohemian district, and recently having been ranked amongst the top 25 hippest neighborhoods in the world, Barranco is home to many of Peru's leading artists, musicians, designers and photographers.
-
As the district of the arts, many of Lima's art museums are located in Barranco. If you are looking for contemporary art, check out Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) on Av. Grau. Museo Pedro de Osma, named after the prominent turn-of-the century politician, houses one of the finest collections of colonial art in all of Perú. Just a block away in a beautiful old colonial home, you will find MATE, a museum dedicated solely to the photographic works of Perú's world famous fashion photographer, Mario Testino.

Barranco is renowned for its nightlife. With British-styled pubs like Wicks, hole-in-wall bars like Juanito's, live music venues La Estación, and La Noche, as well as the traditional Peñas of Manos Morenas and Peña del Carajo, there is really something for all tastes.
-
Many great restaurants call Barranco their home. 2 casual, expat owned places, Twist Gourmet Burger Bar and Burrito Bar, located within a few blocks of each other on Avenida Grau, both offer something different than normally found in Lima and both are excellent.
-
The district’s signature landmark is Puente de Los Suspiros, or Bridge of Sighs. According to an old wives’ tale, if you make a wish and are able to cross the entire bridge without taking a breath, your wish will come true. Underneath this bridge is a walkway to the sea, Bajada de los Baños, lined with bars and restaurants.
-
Barranco has many beautiful colonial homes in various states of repair. Some as mentioned hold museums, others restaurants and nightclubs, while many others sit vacant and vandalized, waiting to be brought back to their original grandeur.
-
At the turn of the last century the beach of Barranco was the summer time beach resort area for the Limeño aristocracy, but is now most popular with the worldwide surf community.
